Biotech as a New Growth Point: What Should a Russian Investor Invest In?

Global biotech is already attracting record capital, while the Russian market is just beginning to form. Which areas could become promising for investors and give Russia a new source of growth — in a column by economist Tserazov.

Life extension has ceased to be a topic for futurists and billionaires discussing immortality on a yacht. In 2026, it is already a full-fledged investment industry: venture funds, pharma corporations, banks, and family offices are flowing into it.

According to the Eurasian Development Bank, the global biotech market has already reached about $2 trillion and could approach $5.9 trillion by 2034, which explains the sustained interest of capital in the longevity sector and related technologies.

As JPMorgan noted, the XBI biotech index (SPDR S&P Biotech ETF, tracking a basket of US biotechs) has reached five-year highs.

The global biotech sector has shown revenue growth for the third consecutive year — according to Ernst & Young's "Biotech Beyond Borders 2026" study, the industry's total revenue grew by 13% to $232 billion.

The influx of capital into the industry is indeed record-breaking. One striking example — in May, Gilead Sciences finalized the acquisition of the German biotech Tubulis for nearly $5 billion, making it the largest private deal in European oncology.

What Does This Mean for Russia?

From the "Aging Gene" to the Longevity Economy

The most prominent part of global biotech is the quest to understand the biological mechanisms of aging.

In global biotech in 2026, the leaders are Altos Labs (over $3 billion raised, cellular reprogramming), Retro Biosciences ($1.8 billion valuation, RTR242 therapy for Alzheimer's disease), and Life Biosciences (clinical trials of cellular rejuvenation). In Russia, the key players are Artgen BioTech (gene therapy and regenerative medicine) and Biocad (oncology and autoimmune biologics).

This year, a clear trend is visible: nearly half of venture capital in biotech goes to companies where AI is the core of the business model — for example, Isomorphic Labs uses AlphaFold for new molecule design, and platforms like Insilico Medicine, which conducted the largest biotech IPO in Hong Kong this year, are building entire medical development ecosystems based on AI.

But investors are looking not only at the "pill for old age." They are interested in the entire healthy living system: early diagnostics (e.g., PathAI in the US or AI-Medicine in Russia), artificial intelligence in healthcare (DeepMind Health, Medialogika), personalized nutrition (Nutrino, Genotek), and wearable devices (Apple Health, Whoop, Yandex Health).

The Russian biotech market is currently in its early stages of development, and according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the domestic biotech industry should grow two to three times by 2030 and exceed 700 billion rubles. Since 2026, Russia has launched the national projects "Technological Support for Bioeconomy" and "Biotechnology."

In my view, the most promising applied areas for Russian capital are:

  • disease diagnosis before symptoms appear (Invitro, Helix);
  • cellular technologies and regenerative medicine (Artgen BioTech, Biocad);
  • production of biologics and vaccines (R-Pharm, Generium);
  • AI analysis of medical images (SberMedAI, AI-Medicine, Medialogika);
  • personalized prevention programs (Genotek, Atlas);
  • biotechnologies in agriculture and raw material processing (Biotrof, Synergy).

In Russia, a "top tier" has already formed in the AI medicine segment: in the "ZdravoAI 2025" ranking, first place goes to Webiomed (predictive analytics and risk management), second and third to Celsus and Third Opinion (medical image analysis).

A telling signal — one Russian biotech company received "national champion" status in 2026. So this field is gradually turning from a narrow scientific niche into an element of industrial policy.

Genetics Does Not Cancel Lifestyle

There are many flashy headlines around the "aging gene," but even the most promising gene therapy will not cancel chronic sleep deprivation, excess processed food, and constant stress.

Therefore, the global industry is gradually shifting its focus: it is no longer just about life expectancy, but about the number of years a person lives active, independent, and, as they say, of sound mind.

Russia is moving in the same direction. An important trend of 2026 is personalization, as even people of the same age and weight can react completely differently to the same food, medications, exercise, and sleep patterns.

The Russian quality-of-life market is already noticeable by global standards — according to one analyst estimate, it amounts to $62 billion annually.

Vitamins, Happiness, and the Habits of the Rich

Ultra-wealthy investors, with whom I constantly deal in my line of work, have long treated health like an investment portfolio. They don't limit themselves to an annual checkup but assemble teams of doctors, nutritionists, sports physiologists, and psychologists around themselves.

Not long ago, extreme biohacking was in vogue — dozens of supplements, ice baths, and attempts to optimize every bodily indicator. Now, more attention is being paid to simple things:

  • stable sleep;
  • strength and aerobic exercise;
  • blood pressure and blood sugar control;
  • normal nutrition without extremes;
  • reduction of chronic stress;
  • regular monitoring rather than rare "heroic" efforts.

Vitamins won't save you if there's no meaning and connection — a troubled body doesn't live long even with ideal cholesterol.

Instead of harsh biohacking, "biochilling" has arrived — gradual changes. For Russia, this is an opportunity: sanatoriums, AI, and genetics could create an excellent export product called "comprehensive longevity."

AI, Autonomous Transport, and Fintech as Part of Biotech

Obviously, AI is becoming part of Russian medicine. By the end of 2025, 48 domestic medical AI programs were registered in Russia. They were analyzing over 600,000 medical images per month, reducing diagnostic time by 30–40%.

3D bioprinting, robotic systems, gene therapy, and personalized vaccines are also developing. Among the key trends in biotech in 2026, the following stands out: synthetic biology, bioengineering, and intelligent biosensor systems are moving from experimental stages into active implementation, strengthening the bioprinting and personalized medical devices segment.

Autonomous transport also has a direct relation to longevity. Every prevented accident is saved years of life and reduced strain on the rehabilitation system. For Russia, with its vast territory, autonomous freight transport, driverless public transport, and intelligent road management could become not just a logistics project but part of a national health preservation policy.

There is another layer — fintech. Insurance companies will be able to take into account not only age and diagnoses but also actual lifestyle in their premium policies: sleep, activity, blood pressure, adherence to doctors' prescriptions.

Importantly, Russia has several advantages: a strong mathematical school, developed fintech, a large domestic market, and the ability to quickly test digital solutions across vast territories. We also have a raw material base for bioeconomy, genomic centers, and a great demand for sovereign medical technologies that will not depend on foreign components or overseas nuances.

In the brokerage business, even before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a feeling: you definitely need to have biotech investments in your portfolio. The pandemic only reinforced this, and now it has become an axiom: medicine is becoming more technological and absorbing all advanced innovations, from AI to blockchain.

We just need to successfully assemble all this into a working system — but this requires specialists, especially those capable of combining biology, mathematics, and programming into a commercial product.

A Window of Opportunity for Russia

The biotech boom is not a race for the immortality pill. The real battle is for additional years of active life — without severe chronic diseases and loss of independence.

In my observations, Russian investors in 2026 will focus on three areas.

First — personalized nutrigenomics (Genotek, Atlas, Nutrino), i.e., selecting nutrition and supplements based on genome sequencing. In general, personalized medicine — diagnostics, cellular technologies, and biologics.

Second — domestic AI diagnostic platforms (AI-Medicine, Medialogika) that can predict neurodegeneration risks 8–12 years before clinical manifestations.

Third — cryptobiology (Russian Zenome, ARNA Genomics), i.e., storing genomic data in decentralized ledgers with access via smart contracts. The global blockchain in genomics market is growing at double-digit rates, and startups like Nebula Genomics use smart contracts for secure DNA data exchange between researchers and patients.

It is very important to understand: digital health systems include more and more things that surround a person. The information collected by smart devices, autonomous personal vehicles, and so on, allows for highly precise personal health planning for each individual.

In essence, while many are talking about a possible universal basic income with the development of neural networks, many are missing something else: AI, blockchain, fintech, the Internet of Things — all of this together is capable of radically reducing state healthcare costs by improving the efficiency of real-time health monitoring. And this, by the way, is already a real chance to balance the budget and reduce its deficit.

Finally, I will note: of course, the biotech question is about how to connect scientific competencies with capital. This must be solved by market professionals — because interest on both sides is great. This means they need to find each other, and then biotech will definitely become a strong growth point for the Russian economy — essentially a "new oil," particularly in terms of exports.
